Chinese astrology, also known as the Eastern zodiac, may be the oldest horoscope system in the world. Its origins trace back almost 5,000 years, to 2637 B.C., from Sumerian and Babylonian cultures. It is widely thought of as the most accurate horoscope form.

Originally based on the major planets of the time – Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus – Chinese astrology was known as Five House or Five Planet Chinese astrology. The subject is separated into 10 heavenly stems and 12 earthly branches.

The 10 heavenly stems are based on five elements, which are subdivided into yin and yang polarities. Yin and yang are traditionally used in Chinese astrology to describe the two opposing, but complementary elements of the universe. Yin stands for sunny and yang stands for shady.

The elements are yang wood (Jia), yin wood (Yi), yang fire (Bing), yin fire (Ding), yang earth (Wu), yin earth (Ji), yang metal (Geng), yin metal (Xin), yang water (Ren) and yin water (Gui).

The 12 earthly branches are the primary signs of Chinese astrology: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

Two new Chinese astrology systems have been created: Ba Zi, which is based on the solar calendar year and Zi Wei, or Purple Emperor, based on the lunar calendar.

As with Western astrology, Chinese astrology has created particular characteristics and personality traits based on which sign you possess, but, unlike Western astrology, Chinese astrology has created a four sign system, one for the year, month, day and hour of birth. This makes it is possible for a graduating class of 2,000 people not to contain two of the same signs. This four sign system is also referred to as the four pillars.

Legends

In Chinese astrology, it is said Buddha asked all the animals to visit him. Only 12 turned up. In thanks, he dedicated a year to each animal that showed. The years were allocated in the order the animals arrived.

Another legend says the animals were quarreling among themselves as to who was to head the cycle of years. In mutual decision, they asked the gods to decide. The gods arranged for a race and the winner would receive head of the cycle. Chinese astrology's legend tells how the rat secretively jumped on the ox's back and, right before the ox landed on shore, jumped off and won the race.

Yet another legend suggests the Yellow Emperor, a semi mythical figure, created Chinese astrology all together.

Chinese astrology has mystified many people throughout centuries. The Chinese astrology system offers clues as to what drives certain human beings, claiming "This is the animal that hides in your heart. "
