Horoscopic astrology is far more than a daily horoscope or sun sign column. Although these sometimes can be accurate for people who fall in the middle of their sun signs, they should be taken as nothing more than casual entertainment.
The word horoscope is derived from a Greek word, horoskopos, which means ascendant.
In ancient Hellenistic astrology the ascendant demarcated the first celestial house of a chart.
Established around the late second or early first century B.C.E., horoscopic astrology, or Hellenistic astrology, finds its roots in the Mediterranean, or more specifically Hellenistic Egypt; many cuneiform charts have been discovered with information ranging from predictions of success to predictions of death. Then and now, horoscopic astrology was/is used to analyze the birth charts of individuals in order to read characteristics, psychological traits, and to some extent destiny.
There are four major branches in horoscopic astrology: natal, katarchic, horary and mundane.
Natal astrology refers to the study of a person's natal chart to retrieve information about a person's life experiences. It represents the positions of the planets and houses as seen from the place of birth at the time of birth. Natal astrology can be thought of as the beginning steps of horoscopic astrology because the necessity to draw up a natal chart when dealing with the rest of the branches.
Katarchic astrology includes both electional and event astrology. The first determines when it is best to start a new business or task. The last tries to understand everything about an event, beginning with the initial time it took place. Since this branch of horoscopic astrology deals with events beginnings, it can sometimes be difficult to culminate an exact horoscope. At what point do you consider an endeavor begun? The idea, the build up or the take-off?
Horary astrology is an ancient Vedic astrology that deals with answers to specific questions at the moment it is posed to the astrologer. Although the answer sought after might be simple, it is not uncommon for a detailed summary that includes motives of the questioner and the participants to be incorporated. Some astrologers do not believe that horary astrology should be included in the major branches of horoscopic astrology.
Mundane or worldly astrology is applicable, as the name would suggest, to world events, such as: earthquakes, wars and the fall of empires and religions. There are two purposes to mundane astrology: to explain past historical events and their significance and to possibly predict what kind of worldly events may happen in the future. By astrologers, it is widely believed that mundane astrology may be the oldest and most ancient branch of horoscopic astrology.
People will always take an interest in their horoscope in the local column, but for the professionals, there is a lot more to think about than sun signs. Each of these branches encompassed in horoscopic astrology requires insight into all aspects of astrology, the sun, moon, planets, etc., to complete the horoscope. Astrology is a complex affair.
